Surfing the South Coast Sri Lanka

Hiriketiya Bay is unique in shape and topography making surf available approximately ten months of the year. During peak holiday seasons from Dec-May smaller swells from the west create a perfect beginner’s beach break wave and the occasional ride on the left point break. During shoulder season Aug-Nov the waves are at their best after a slight drop in midyear swell size creating a clean beach and left point break. During the middle of the year (when the crowds are away) larger southerly swells create some fun yet challenging waves right across the bay.

Use our complimentary beginner boards to get wet and have some fun. That's right, no need to hire a board. Just grab and go!

Surf Points Near Hiriketiya

Right Point

Approx 10km east of Salt lays Right Point. (It has a real name but we can’t tell you just yet) This is a nice clean right hander off a point similar to Hiriketiya. It captures swell most of the year and is an intermediate wave.

Lobsters

Approx 7km west of Hiriketiya near the boat harbor. This is a beginner wave on some days and has an intermediate wave on others. It is more exposed than some of the other breaks so it can be wind swept during some parts of the year.

Kudawella Beach

A long stretch of beach only a few KM’s from Hiriketiya and very often offers a decent beginner and intermediate wave. Certainly worth a look if Hiriketiya is not quite catching enough swell.

Sampaths & S.K. Town

A little further west (17km) but well worth it on a beautiful morning tuk tuk ride. This is a well-known south coast spot with a couple of beach breaks. You can generally catch a wave there most part of the year. Beginner to intermediate waves.
