You arrive on Sri Lanka’s southern coast with two things in mind: waves and a little more time for yourself.
Maybe you want to learn to surf, practise yoga every morning and meet people along the way. Or perhaps you want a proper retreat, where someone else has already thought about the schedule and you can simply arrive and settle into the experience.
There is no shortage of ways to combine surfing, yoga and wellness around Sri Lanka’s south coast. Soul&Surf is one of the better-known names for travellers looking for a structured surf and yoga retreat, while places such as Talalla, Hiriketiya and Dikwella offer different ways to combine surfing, yoga, food, nature and beach life.
So the question is less about which retreat is “better” and more about what kind of experience you actually want from your time in Sri Lanka.
Soul&Surf takes a more structured approach. Its Sri Lankan retreat is designed as an organised week, with surfing, guided sessions, yoga, workshops, meals and the social side of the retreat built around a set programme.
That format has an obvious appeal.
If you are travelling alone, visiting Sri Lanka for the first time or simply don’t want to spend your holiday working out where to surf, when to practise yoga or what to do next, having the week planned can make things wonderfully easy.
The surf programme is also designed around progression rather than simply giving guests a taste of surfing. Lessons, guided sessions and video analysis give the week a clear learning structure, while yoga provides another part of the daily routine.
For some travellers, that structure is exactly what makes a retreat feel like a retreat.
But there are other ways to experience surf and yoga in Sri Lanka.
Further along Sri Lanka’s southern coast,Talalla Retreat offers a different kind of retreat experience.
Set on a large beachfront property at Talalla Beach, the retreat combines accommodation, yoga, Pilates, surfing, wellness treatments, food and time by the ocean. The property has five yoga shalas, including open-air spaces, as well as an Ayurvedic spa, swimming pool and newer bathhouse facilities.
For travellers who want their holiday to revolve primarily around wellness, this creates a more self-contained retreat environment.
Talalla offers regular yoga classes as well as longer retreat programmes. Its current wellness retreat runs for seven nights and eight days and combines daily yoga and Pilates with meals, meditation, sound healing, workshops and access to the wider retreat facilities.
There is also a dedicated surf programme, with coaching for beginners through to more experienced surfers. Surf-and-yoga programmes combine surf sessions with yoga and workshops designed to complement the surfing experience.
The difference here is that the retreat itself is the destination.
You can arrive at Talalla and spend much of your stay within a purpose-built wellness environment, with the beach, yoga spaces, food, surf programme and other facilities all part of the same property.
For someone looking for a more traditional retreat setting, that can be exactly what they are after.
Back in Hiriketiya, Dots Bay House offers another approach.
Dots combines accommodation with surfing, yoga, food and a more social atmosphere. The property has several accommodation options, from dorm-style rooms to private rooms, bungalows and family suites.
Its rooftop yoga shala gives guests another way to practise while staying close to the beach and the rest of Hiriketiya.
Dots is particularly suited to travellers who want to combine surfing and yoga with the social side of staying in Hiriketiya. The property also has a restaurant, pool area and events, making it possible to spend time at the property while still being right in the middle of the wider Hiriketiya scene.
Accommodation bookings currently include breakfast, along with access to the property’s pool and shared spaces.
The experience is therefore less about following a fixed retreat schedule and more about having a base in Hiriketiya from which you can build your own days.
You might surf in the morning, join a yoga class, have lunch by the beach and then decide what you want to do with the rest of the afternoon.
Salt House offers a similar flexibility, but with its own approach to the Hiriketiya experience.
Rather than arriving with a fixed seven-day schedule, you can make Salt House your base and decide what your days look like.
Yoga is part of the everyday rhythm. Salt House offers complimentary daily yoga classes for in-house guests, with different styles and formats and classes suitable for different experience levels. The yoga shala looks out into the surrounding jungle, giving the practice a very different feeling from a conventional studio.
Then there is the ocean.
Salt House provides free surfboard use for guests, while Hiriketiya Bay itself is right outside. That means surfing doesn’t have to become a scheduled activity that you have to fit around the rest of your stay.
If the waves look good after breakfast, you can go surfing.
If you would rather spend the afternoon reading, exploring the coastline or doing absolutely nothing, you can do that instead.
That flexibility is one of the biggest differences between a structured retreat and staying independently in Hiriketiya.
At Soul & Surf, the programme is part of the product.
At Talalla, the retreat environment is the destination.
At Dots, the beach and social atmosphere are a big part of the experience.
At Salt House, the place itself becomes part of the experience.
Staying independently does not mean giving up the idea of a retreat.
Salt House also hosts dedicated yoga retreats throughout the year, with different teachers and retreat concepts bringing their own approach to the experience.
The retreats aren’t all the same, which is part of the appeal.
The 2026 Salt House retreat calendar includes four different retreats taking place between October and November, each with its own focus, teachers and approach to the experience.
Loka Retreats Yoga, Surf and Adventures takes a broader approach to the Sri Lankan experience, combining yoga and surfing with activities such as kayaking, a safari, cooking with a local family, sauna, cold plunges, sound baths and massages. Rather than spending the entire retreat inside a retreat bubble, the programme is designed around experiencing Hiriketiya and the surrounding area.
The Seeking Stillness Retreat explores the quieter and more introspective side of yoga and meditation, while the Grass Roots Yoga + Surf Retreat combines a structured yoga programme with surfing and time in the ocean.
Check the Salt House retreats page directly for confirmed dates, instructor details and current availability. Dates and retreat details can occasionally be updated, so the official page is always the most reliable source.
The variety is also what makes the Salt House retreat programme different from simply booking a standard surf-and-yoga package. Rather than offering one fixed retreat format, different teachers and retreat leaders bring their own style and focus to the space.
This means that Salt House can work in two very different ways.
You can stay independently and build your own retreat, or you can choose a specific retreat that matches what you want to experience during your time in Sri Lanka.
Yoga and breakfast without committing to a full retreat
There is also a middle ground that is easy to overlook.
You don’t have to choose between a completely independent holiday and a seven-day organised retreat.
You can simply stay at a surf-and-yoga destination such as Hiriketiya, join individual yoga classes, surf when you want and explore the area at your own pace.
In Hiriketiya, both Salt House and Dots Bay House provide ways to combine accommodation, surfing and yoga without committing to a traditional all-inclusive retreat.
Talalla also offers drop-in yoga and Pilates classes for visitors who are not staying for an entire retreat.
For travellers who already have a larger Sri Lanka itinerary, this can make a lot of sense.
You might spend three or four nights in Hiriketiya rather than committing an entire week to a retreat, while still getting many of the things you came looking for: yoga, surfing, good food, community and time by the ocean.
It also leaves room for the rest of Sri Lanka.
One of the biggest advantages of choosing the south coast is that you don’t necessarily have to decide between a retreat and experiencing the destination itself.
Hiriketiya is a small coastal community where the beach, surf, restaurants, cafés and other activities are all close together.
Talalla, meanwhile, offers a more secluded beachfront setting where wellness and retreat life can take centre stage.
Both approaches have their place.
There is no single way to do a surf and yoga trip in Sri Lanka.
If what you want is a fully organised surf and yoga week, with lessons, activities, meals and a group structure already arranged, Soul & Surf provides that format.
If you want a dedicated wellness retreat by the beach, with yoga, Pilates, surfing and wellness facilities all in one place, Talalla Retreat offers that kind of experience.
If you want surfing, yoga, accommodation and a social atmosphere right on Hiriketiya Beach, Dots Bay House is another option to consider.
If you prefer to have more control over your days, Salt House gives you the freedom to decide how much surfing, yoga, exploring or simply doing nothing you want to fit into your stay.
And if you like the idea of a structured retreat but want something more varied than a standard surf-and-yoga schedule, Salt House’s retreat programme gives you another option, with different experiences taking place throughout the year.
Ultimately, it comes down to how you like to travel.
Some people love knowing exactly what tomorrow looks like.
Others would rather wake up, look at the ocean and decide.
And Sri Lanka’s south coast gives you the freedom to do either.
The important thing is finding the format that fits the kind of trip you actually want.
Cheers!
